Cracked Teeth
What Is the Prognosis of a Cracked Tooth?
Some common types of cracks are superficial and require no intervention while other cracks can eventually lead to the loss of your tooth. A cracked tooth can cause a wide variety of symptoms. Movement along the crack irritates the nerve of the tooth. If cracks and fractures are left untreated they can allow bacteria from your saliva to penetrate the tooth and cause infection. Some cracks in teeth are deep enough to cause root canal disease, and can effectiviely be treated, while other cracks are so deep that no dental treatment can save the tooth. Often we will expose a 3D (CBCT) scan of the tooth to further diagnose the crack. Other times we will need to open the tooth to be able to assess a crack internally. Ultimately, we only want to treat teeth that we feel will have good healing outcomes.
